However, the Dutchman will now start in 17th place after missing out on Q2 in qualifying, albeit in cruel circumstances.

Verstappen and Red Bull teammate under fire Sergio Perez They placed 12th and 13th respectively in Q2, which put them in the elimination zone.

Unfortunately for the Red Bull pairing, they didn’t even have one last chance to get out of the bottom five after Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll crashed at Turn 3.

The race was immediately red flagged with 46 seconds remaining, causing an early end to Q2.

Not only was Verstappen eliminated, but he would also start the race from 17th given his grid penalty.

The Dutchman’s father, Jos, was not happy with the result and was caught banging his fist on a table in the garage.

Verstappen was understandably furious once he returned to the paddock and offered a blunt verdict when asked his opinion on the matter.

“The car hits the wall, it has to be red,” Verstappen told Sky Sports.

“I don’t understand why it takes 30, 40 seconds for a red flag to appear. It’s just bullshit.”

The journalist informed Verstappen that the stewards wanted to try to let some drivers finish their laps, but waved the red flag when they realized that Stroll’s car was in a dangerous position.

Verstappen responded: “I don’t know, honestly, I let it go. It’s so stupid to talk about it anyway, it’s ridiculous.”

Stroll was one of several casualties in qualifying, as wet weather in Sao Paulo wreaked havoc.

The Canadian’s Aston Martin teammate, Fernando Alonso, crashed in Q3 when he lost control of the rear of his car and caused another red flag.

Williams also faces the daunting prospect of none of its drivers being able to compete after Alexander Albon and Franco Colapinto crashed during qualifying.

Albon’s accident was especially brutal when the rear of his car slammed into the barriers.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was another qualifying casualty when he too lost the rear of his car during Q2.

Fortunately for McLaren, Lando Norris was able to overcome the wet and wild conditions and take pole position for the Brazilian GP.

Mercedes’ George Russell joins him on the front row in second position.

RB duo Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson put in impressive performances to qualify third and fifth respectively, while Alpine’s Esteban Ocon will start fourth.
