The High Court (HC) today (November 3) accepted a petition to prepare the paper book for filing an appeal against a 7-year sentence of BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia corruption case Charitable Trust.

A High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain passed the order after Begum Zia’s lawyers filed the petition.

Senior Advocate Joynul Abedin, Advocate Kaiser Kamal, Advocate Md. Ruhul Kuddus Kajol, Advocate Aminul Islam and Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajol have contested for BNP President.

Senior advocate Joynul Abedin said Begum Khaleda Zia did not seek any favors as she wants to resolve the case legally.

“Therefore, we want to appeal to the court against the conviction order against her in the corruption case. The relevant court accepted our request to prepare the paper book of the case on our own,” Abedin said.

A court here awarded seven years in prison to Begum Khaleda Zia and three others in the corruption case in October 2018.

The court also fined them and ordered the competent authority to confiscate 42 kathas of land purchased for trust in government custody.

Begum Zia subsequently filed an appeal against the sentence in the High Court.

She did not get justice as she was denied bail by the court during the overthrown fascist government and at one point was released on conditional bail by government executive order.

But Begum Khaleda Zia was released from the secondary prison on August 6 under an executive order after a joint meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin and heads of the three services, leaders of different political parties, civil society representatives and leaders of the student movement against discrimination. at Bangabhaban on August 5.

The former prime minister and fascist Awami League sheikh, Sheikh Hasina, fled the country in the face of the massive uprising led by the student movement against discrimination on August 5.
