Wayanad: Congress leader and Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Priyanka Gandhi slammed the Modi-led central government, accusing it of prioritizing the interests of big business over the welfare of the public.

Speaking at a rally, Priyanka Gandhi stated that the main objective of the Modi government is to remain in power by dividing the population, spreading hatred and suppressing democratic institutions. She said, “Modi ji’s government works only for its big business friends. Its objective is not to give you a better life, create jobs or improve health and education. It is simply about staying in power by any means possible. And what are the means? “They are dividing them, spreading anger, spreading hate, taking away their rights and oppressing democratic institutions.”

Priyanka Gandhi also praised the people of Wayanad for their resilience and history of fighting against oppression. She said: “This is a land where people live together regardless of their religion. You have a strong history with leaders like Pazhassi Raja, Thalakkal Chanthu and Edachena Kunkan, who fought for what is right, for equality and against oppressors.”

He further expressed his gratitude to the people of Wayanad for supporting his brother Rahul Gandhi, especially at times when he faced relentless attacks from the BJP. “When Rahul Gandhi ji was facing grave challenges and was being attacked daily by the BJP in a campaign to tarnish his reputation, it was you, my brothers and sisters, who recognized that he was fighting for the truth. “You were by his side, supported him and gave him the courage to fight,” he said.

Wayanad constituency, considered a Congress bastion, will witness an electoral contest between Priyanka Gandhi, BJP candidate Navya Haridas and Left candidate Sathyan Mokeri. Priyanka Gandhi is contesting as a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, contesting the seat vacated by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, after he was also elected to the Lok Sabha from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh in the recent general elections.

Elections in Wayanad are scheduled to be held on November 13, coinciding with by-elections in 47 constituencies of 15 states as well as the first phase of Jharkhand assembly elections on the same date.
