Carson Bruener has arguably his best game as a Husky

Carson Bruener has played some pretty spectacular games for the University of Washington football team throughout his career.

Three years ago, he made his first Husky start as a redshirt freshman at Stanford and racked up 16 tackles, including 1½ sacks and a forced fumble, in a 20-13 win at Palo Alto, and was named Pac -12. Defensive player of the week.

Last season, the junior from Woodinville, Washington, and son of former Husky and NFL tight end Mark Bruener, made 14 tackles each in consecutive weekends, doing so in two different and decidedly creative ways: as a starter in Oregon State and as a reserve in the Apple Cup against Washington State.

However, in Saturday night’s 26-21 win over USC, Bruener was never better in his 48 appearances at UW, 15 of which were starts. He finished with a game-high 12 tackles, almost double that of anyone playing for either side, and had 2 interceptions and a pair of pass deflections.

“Carson Bruener had a great game,” confirmed UW coach Jedd Fisch, calling the linebacker’s collective effort the best of the season.

Bruener’s second interception of the third quarter, in particular, helped change the momentum of the game after the Huskies fell behind 21-20 and USC moved the ball and reached midfield looking for more.

He jumped on a Miller Moss pass over the middle and returned it 16 yards to the Trojans’ 39. Eight plays later, the Huskies scored the game-winner on a 4-yard run by Keith Reynolds on a quick sweep.

With the two interceptions against USC, Bruener now has 3 this season and the team lead, one more than senior safety Kamren Fabiculanan, and each player noted the other’s contributions to game pass stealing as they left the interview room. For his career, he now has 5 interceptions, not bad for someone who doesn’t play defensive back in constant coverage.

The best game of all time?

“It could be,” Bruener said. “I haven’t really watched. When we watch film, I can watch and correct myself on what I did wrong and what I did right, and see where I scored. Right now, I feel like I played pretty well.”

There are no arguments from anyone about that evaluation.
