The reason I am proud to be a Hindu is because we do not shy away from evolution. Given our progressive attitude, I think it is high time we start calling the festival Bhai-Behen Dooj, given the times we live in. Every festival and custom needs to evolve over time, which eventually leads to the evolution of society. I feel like my sisters are also worthy of worship. Whenever we celebrate this festival, or even Raksha Bandhan, I make sure to touch their feet as a mark of respect towards them.

Actor Abhishek Sharma, my best friend’s husband, is my brother and means a lot to me. We celebrate festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj, but our celebration is not limited to specific days. A couple of days ago we had a nice dinner. Given our busy lives, I plan to send you your favorite dessert and food tomorrow to celebrate Bhai Dooj.

Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhai Phota, for us Bengalis is a really special day as my sister Dahlia (Sen Oberoi; lawyer) and I are not just siblings but also best friends and mutual confidants. I am grateful that our parents raised us in such a beautiful way, where we are inseparable. Dahlia recites a poem of Yam and Yamuna when she teekas me. She makes a special teeka every year, either with kesar or chandan. Hum dono vrat arte hain jab tak teeka nahin hota, and then we eat together. She cooks me amazing food.

Tanishk Bagchi: Bhai Dooj helps me remind my sisters what they mean to me

Bhai Dooj is all about love, respect and a little bit of “I’ve got your back” energy. My sisters are my inexhaustible source of energy and strength, those who keep me strong and, at the same time, encourage me when I need it. They are my accomplices, my secret keepers and my support system. Bhai Dooj is when I can remind them how much they mean to me, even though they already know that.

Nikhita Gandhi: I have good memories of Bhai Phota

I grew up among many cousins in Kolkata and we celebrated Bhai Phota there. When I was a child, I would go to our cousins’ house and we would do the ritual. We memorized a poem, Bhai Amar Bhai, and recited it for our brothers. And then they gave us chocolates. That is my best memory of the day. Now, this day gives us a chance to catch up or just pick up the phone and talk to each other. Nitish, my mother’s son, is my dearest brother.
