Officer caught on video crashing into 8-year-old boy riding dirt bike

An 8-year-old boy in Florida was seriously injured after a Sarasota police officer crashed into him with his patrol car on Monday, in an incident captured on body camera footage.

Gerard Butler, 8, had just received the minibike as an early birthday gift the weekend before the accident. He began returning home after feeling frightened by police activity in his neighborhood. His mother, Regina Sanders, he told CBS affiliate WTSP.

An officer in a patrol car leaving the scene of a different call hit the boy around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche said at a news conference. He the police department also shared Graphic body camera images online.

In one video, the unnamed officer can be seen turning left at an intersection, running a stop sign without appearing to come to a complete stop before accelerating and striking the child. The officer then exits his patrol car and Butler can be seen lying on the ground a long distance from the vehicle.

“You just see the cops flying around, at least going 60 miles, and they don’t care about stop signs, they just fly down the roads,” Sanders told WTSP. “I was inside and I heard something scraping and then you see the little minibike there.”

In the video, the officer calls for backup and emergency medical help as a crowd of panicked neighbors forms. Meanwhile, the police make some attempts at CPR, but can’t find a defibrillator.

The boy was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and treated for serious injuries, according to a early release by the police. Sanders told WTSP earlier this week that her son had undergone two brain surgeries and knee surgery and is scheduled for jaw surgery.

In an update on Wednesday ABC affiliate WWSB Sanders said her son has only been able to move his legs slightly and cough since he was admitted to the hospital.

“I’ve never been through anything like this before,” Sanders said.

Police told WTSP that the officer involved was uninjured but is shaken by the incident. He is performing restrictive administrative duties while the investigation continues.
