Former North Dakota Senator Ray Holmberg enters Minnesota prison – InForum

FARGO – Former North Dakota Sen. Ray Holmberg has reported to go to prison, authorities say.

The Grand Forks Republican who admitted to traveling to Prague

with plans to sexually abuse a minor

voluntarily surrendered on Friday, Nov. 1, to the U.S. Marshals Service in North Dakota, U.S. Marshal Dallas Carlson confirmed to The Forum.

Carlson declined to say which facility Holmberg will be incarcerated in, as the U.S. Marshals Service typically does not comment on the matter. A search of jail records revealed that he was booked into the Sherburne County Jail in Elk River, Minnesota, which is about 35 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

Holmberg, 80, will be jailed while awaiting sentencing in North Dakota District Court on the federal charge. After

Holmberg repeatedly violated his release conditions,

Judge Daniel Hovland

on Tuesday ordered the former senator to surrender to the U.S. Marshals Service.

This is the first time Holmberg has been put behind bars for the child sex tourism case.

Holmberg has been allowed to remain out of jail since his indictment in late October 2023. Prosecutors and Holmberg’s defense team agreed during a plea hearing in August that medical issues qualified him for exceptional circumstances to continue. with his release.

Hovland warned Holmberg that continually violating the terms of his release, which he did several times before his plea hearing, could impact his ability to stay out of jail. Hovland ruled Tuesday that those exceptional circumstances no longer existed.

As of Friday, a sentencing hearing had not been scheduled. Prosecutors are likely to ask for a sentence of approximately three years in prison.

Holmberg represented Grand Forks in the North Dakota Senate from 1976 to 2022.
