Enter Jaguars practice on final day before Eagles game

The Jacksonville Jaguars held their final practice before Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, and Jaguars On SI was there through it all.

To watch the Jaguars prepare for the Eagles, watch below.

Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen spoke Thursday. Below is a transcript.

Q: About the Eagles quarterback’s sneak play?

Nielsen: “They do a great job… I mean, the conversion rate is at an all-time high, right? I mean, they have been arrested and it has to be done… it is a work of tension and they have to be overcome. I mean, that’s really what it all comes down to. You have to play lower than them, you have to try harder than them and they execute at a high level. We’ll have to do a really good job just executing and pushing. And then the other thing, let’s not get into that situation. “It’s a lot easier said than done, but let’s keep them out of third and fourth and one.”

Q: About covering Eagles WR AJ Brown and WR DeVonta Smith?

Nielsen: “They have very good talent, very good talent. He’s playing at a high level since he returned. Physical receiver, very physical, catch point, strong hands. He’s really good at press coverage and getting off the line and has great speed. So, it will be a good challenge. We just have to play our game. We have to go in and make it a physical game for him. We have to cover a little bit on top, so he doesn’t just catch fade balls and things like that that people do. But two really good receivers. And then with the speed that DeVonta has, he can outrun any coverage. So just running, we’re going to have to play some shell on it. I definitely have to be above those guys and then mix it up. Just keep mixing coverages on him so he doesn’t get one high read and go X or Z on every play.”

Q: How will the return of S Andrew Wingard change your safety rotation?

Nielsen: “A little bit, but we have the guys who have done it; He has been away for a long time and that is why he is working to return. We’d like to get him out there and get a certain amount of snaps and see how it goes. But he is pressing. He’s pushing a lot. Yesterday was a good day, today will be another good test. At the end of the week, we’ll have an idea of exactly how much as you go through the week’s process.”

Q: About the impact of getting S Tashaun Gipson Sr. back?

Nielsen: “It’s great to have him back. We are excited, very excited. But he hasn’t practiced yet. Then everything comes into play. We’ll get it out and get it moving. Obviously, we have to knock the rust off that kind of thing. Then, throw him into the rotation and get him some plays and see where he is and then go from there. Where the pieces fall, we simply don’t know. It’s very early and he hasn’t even practiced. “So, we’ll go over the week and then figure it out from there.”

Q: What have you seen from CB Jarrian Jones as he adjusts to the nickel role?

Nielsen: “Yes, trust. He really has confidence. In every game, he even says it after the game: he feels more comfortable out there. He’s playing more snaps, the different coverages and the things that position has to do. Just how he moves and plays physically, and the play he made in the red zone was a big play. Really very good. Just continue to watch him grow in that position. “He could still come out if we need him to, but he’s adjusting to that nickel position and doing a good job right now.”

Q: What happened during the last big pass against Green Bay?

Nielsen: “Yes, of course, I have to change the coverage. It’s up to me, I have to change the coverage. So, let’s do a different coverage in that situation.”

Q: Involve DE Arik Armstead more and play more inside?

Nielsen: “Yes, we talked inside and out, more or less with the boy. When we signed him, it was more of an outside look and moving him inside on third down just as far as depth and stuff like where he wanted to play and stuff like that. A lot of the situational things, putting him in, that’s where he plays in two minutes, things like that. But you can definitely get in. It’s just when we want to start working with him there and you might see him coming here, moving inside in nickel situations, things like that. But he has to continue playing the left wing position and that takes a little bit of time playing inside and outside and we have to get him some more plays and get him comfortable in that, just more plays in him.”
