Crime declines on long-troubled New York block: City Hall

Crime has plummeted along East 14th Street, and all it took was a wave of stabbings.

Since an apparent lunatic stabbed three people on East 14th Street near Avenue A in June, kill a 38 year old man and leaving two others seriously injured, Serious crime on the block has fallen more than 57%, according to data provided by Mayor Adams’ office.

In the 28-day period ending Oct. 13, there were six incidents, compared with 14 incidents during the same period in 2023, the data showed.

Overall, so far in 2024, serious crime, which includes murder, robbery and serious assault, has plummeted 12.5% ​​compared to the same period in 2023.

Calls to 911 about the problem area have dropped nearly 34% over the 28-day period compared to the same period in 2023, while calls to 311 have dropped about 44%, the mayor’s office said.

“The undeniable progress on 14th Street demonstrates the proven success of our community-driven, multi-agency approach to quality of life and public safety issues,” Adams said.

After the stabbing, the city launched a multi-institutional operation in August, installing daily NYPD pedestrian checkpoints on East 14th Street, increasing trash collection and strengthening outreach to the homeless.
