Man allegedly raped one woman, attacked another within 45 minutes in Bay Village and Theater District

A Lowell man allegedly raped one woman in Bay Village and attempted to rape another woman he randomly encountered in the Theater District last Saturday, according to court records.

Solomon Wambui, 25, was arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court, where he was ordered held without bail under the state’s dangerousness law. He pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and assault with intent to rape, records show.

Around 4:30 am, a 26-year-old woman was walking home in Bay Village after working late, according to court records. The woman was talking to her mother on the phone when Wambui allegedly came up behind her on Cortes Street.

“Can you go away?” the woman asked Wambui, according to court records. “Can I have some personal space?”

Wambui allegedly responded by insisting that the woman “come with me. I can help you. I can bring you home,” prosecutors said in court records.

At that point Wambui allegedly grabbed the woman by “the front of her neck and then from behind and dragged her down to the ground” and raped her, prosecutors said.

“The entire attack and rape of the first woman was captured on video,” prosecutors said.

As Wambui ran down Arlington Street, the woman recorded him on her cellphone, called 911, and gave police his description. Officers began searching the area and spotted a man matching the suspect’s description emerging from Eliot Norton Park around 5:15 a.m., prosecutors said.

A 47-year-old woman walking nearby told police the man had sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said.

She later told police she was walking on Charles Street South when a man began following her.

“She picked up her walking pace and he then did so as well,” prosecutors said.

Wambui allegedly grabbed the woman and put his hand over her mouth, causing her to struggle to breathe because of her asthma, prosecutors said.

Wambui allegedly forced her to the grassy section of the park and assaulted her, prosecutors said.

“She was crying. She tried to get away from him by twisting and contorting her body. The victim tried to scream as much as possible but while his hand was covering his mouth it was difficult,” prosecutors said.

The woman managed to convince Wambui to stop and walk with her out of the park “to see if she could get away from him,” prosecutors said.

Police searching for the man who raped the woman on Cortes Street saw Wambui and noticed his zipper was open and that he was bleeding from a scratch, prosecutors said. Officers arrested him in connection with both attacks, prosecutors said.

“The nature and circumstances of these offenses can only be described as violent, cruel, and utterly heinous,” prosecutors said. “The only reason he was discovered and ultimately arrested was due to the fact that he assaulted another victim close in time and proximity to assaulting the first victim.”

In court papers, prosecutors said Wambui has no previous convictions for domestic violence and was not on probation for any recent convictions.

His defense attorney was not immediately available Friday.

His arrest was first reported by the Boston Herald.

Wambui is due back in court Nov. 22.
