Quiet hours introduced for Christmas shopping

The Isle of Man telecommunications company is introducing quiet shopping hours at its high street stores.

The change will be implemented over the Christmas shopping period and will remain a permanent feature at the Douglas store on Strand Street after that.

It aims to offer “a relaxed and inclusive shopping experience for customers who may find the typical atmosphere overwhelming, especially during the holiday season.”

Hours are now every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with music off, lights dimmed, and screens off.

Manx Telecom said the idea came about because a staff member’s “own experience with a neurodiverse family member highlighted the need for a sensory shopping experience.”

The start of quiet hours was said to have been greeted with “a calm and pleasant response”.

Nick Callow, head of consumer at Manx Telecom, said: “We understand that for some of our customers, the usual rush of Christmas shopping can feel overwhelming.

“By making small but thoughtful changes to create a calmer, calmer atmosphere, we hope to make shopping a more comfortable experience for everyone.”

He added: “We are grateful for the feedback we have received from the community, which has helped us better understand how meaningful these adjustments can be for many people.”
