Carlisle to host combined food and fireworks festival

For the first time a city celebrates its fireworks in combination with a food and drink festival.

Up to 35,000 people are expected to watch the Cumberland Council fire show in Bitts Park, Carlisle, later.

The cathedral grounds will also host a two-day event featuring 40 traders from Taste Cumbria and Carlisle Farmers Market.

Cumberland Council’s Anne Quilter said combining the events would create “an explosive weekend of fun for all the family”.

The fire show, which begins at 18:30 GMT, includes a central bonfire and more than 2,000 fireworks.

The event is free, but donations will go to Rotary in Carlisle, Pancreatic Cancer UK and Eden Valley Hospice.

Stalls for the Food and Drink Festival will be open from 10am on Saturdays and Sundays and there will also be food and entertainment in Castle Car Park for Fireshow attendees.
