UTampa Student Gets Bail After Newborn Baby Found in Trash Can on Campus

The University of tampa A student accused of suffocating her newborn after giving birth in a dorm bathroom has been granted bail.

A judge set 19-year-old Brianna Moore’s bond at $260,000 after an emotional hearing Friday. The bail is much lower than what prosecutors had requested, after the judge made clear that the details of the case are enough to bother anyone.

“The defendant told security and EMS that the blood in the bathroom was just from a heavy period and that she was not pregnant and has never been pregnant,” said Detective Juan Ramos of the Tampa Police Department.

Detectives told the judge that she admitted that she could have denied being pregnant, but that seconds after delivery, she admitted to holding the baby to her chest for between three and 10 minutes.

“That baby was breathing,” prosecutor Lindsay Hodges said. “She cried loud enough and long enough for the suitemates and roommates to wake up. And when they heard that and when the defendant heard it, she silenced him.”

The documents say he wrapped the baby in a towel and put her in a trash can. Her roommates, who thought the sounds from the bathroom at 7 a.m. were part of her own dreams, discovered it and called the police.

An autopsy found the Baby died of asphyxiation and had broken ribs.. Prosecutors argued that Moore should be given $500,000 bail.

“This is a very difficult case,” said Tampa Judge Christopher Sabella. “It’s difficult because of how sad and atrocious this case is.”

But her defense argued that she is not a threat to the community and that she is not a flight risk, since she has cooperated with detectives.

“There is no evidence of current patterns of behavior that would indicate she would not appear in court,” said attorney Libby Beardsley.

He ultimately got bail at $260,000, about half of what prosecutors were asking for, but he has to wear an ankle monitor and has promised to remain in Hillsborough County until his trial.

“In fact, there is a substantial probability that the defendant committed the crime,” Sabella said. “That’s the easiest part of the analysis.”

There are no future court dates yet, but at some point he will face aggravated murder charges.
