Former Seattle Mariners All-Star chooses free agency and will need a new team in 2025

Former Seattle Mariners All-Star first baseman Ty France will need a new team in 2025. He has been elected a free agent after being beaten by the Cincinnati Reds.

The following comes from MLBTradeRumors, which includes information on France’s contract structure:

He would have been eligible for arbitration and was projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $8.6 million in his final season at the helm of the club. Today’s outright pick and subsequent free agency picks are effectively an early non-bid.

Given the looming financial commitment, it is understandable why the Reds want to leave France.

Francia, 30, was designated for assignment by the Mariners in July, and then signed with the Reds. He hit just .223 for Seattle with eight home runs. However, he was a valuable member of the organization for several years since being acquired in a 2020 trade. He helped Seattle break the drought in 2022 and made the All-Star Game that season. Throughout his life, he hit .266 with the M’s.

With the Reds, he performed better in the final 52 games of the season. He hit .251 with five home runs and 20 RBIs, perhaps taking advantage of an easier travel schedule and a more hitter-friendly ballpark. The Reds missed the playoffs, as did the Mariners.

Given his age and previous history, France should have no problem finding an opportunity this offseason, although whether or not he will have to settle for a minor league contract remains to be seen.

He sailors The plan at first base is unclear at this time. Luke Raley is capable of playing the position, although he would most likely need a platoon partner.
