Prospect Gallery opens Saturday night in downtown Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A family in love with the arts created a home of sorts for artists with Southern roots.

The family created Prospect Gallery in downtown Hattiesburg on Main Street.

According to gallery curator Rachel Shemper Schwartz, her brother, David Shemper, is the founder and renovator of Prospect On Main.

Prospect on Main is the historic building that houses the Prospect Gallery.

Schwartz invites everyone to see the first exhibition of another brother, Adam Shemper, on Saturday.

The exhibition is titled: Adam Shemper, Light In These Hills.

Schwartz said this was the first of rotating, limited-time exhibitions by artists from the South or with Southern roots.

Schwartz said he wants the public to attend the opening to help support and grow a vibrant arts community.

“The exhibition is a retrospective exhibition of photography,” Schwartz said. “All images were captured in and around Oxford, Mississippi and Lafayette County,” Schwartz said.

The exhibit will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Prospect Galley, 522 Main St., Hattiesburg.

“My hope for the gallery is that it will be a place where people can come and feel inspired and connected to southern artists, painters, photographers and sculptors, and people also feel more connected to all of downtown Hattiesburg, which was the city center. Adam Shemper said.
