Mother remembered after dying in ‘tragic’ triple fatal crash that left daughter seriously injured near Woodstock

A mother is being remembered for her “kindness, generosity and unwavering support” after she died in a triple fatal crash near Woodstock that left her daughter seriously injured.

TO GoFundMe account has been established for the family of Amy Roeder, who died in the fatal crash in the 13400 block of Davis Road in unincorporated Woodstock on Sunday.

“Amy has always been there for others, whether lending a hand, offering words of encouragement or simply being a friend in times of need,” the story reads. “Now it is our turn to support his family as they go through this difficult time.”

The daughter has been in the ICU since the accident but is recovering, the story reads. Roeder also leaves behind a husband and two children.

Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, Woodstock Police Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to Davis Road for a report of a multi-vehicle accident with entrapment.

Police said a 2021 Dodge Challenger Hellcat was traveling westbound on Davis Road and attempted to pass a 2021 Jeep Wrangler in a no-passing zone, sheriff’s officials said Monday morning.

The Dodge collided with an eastbound 2022 Volvo XC 90 at the crest of a hill, causing the Volvo to go off the road southbound.

After impact, the Dodge spun as it continued west and left the roadway to the north, where it caught fire.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office announced that Alex Gonzalez, 18, and Miguel A. Martinez Santiago, 17, both of Harvard, were the people traveling in the Dodge.

The Jeep was hit by debris from the crash, but managed to avoid a direct hit with the other vehicles, sheriff’s officials said.

Alex Vucha, communications specialist for Woodstock Fire and Rescue District, said firefighters arrived within four minutes and located a serious accident with the Dodge completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighters deployed a hose to contain the vehicle fire, which had begun to spread to a nearby wooded area, Vucha said.

Vucha said the seriously injured child was transported by ambulance to the Northwestern Medicine Hospital helipad in Woodstock, then a LifeNet medical helicopter took the child to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

González and Martínez Santiago were located inside the Dodge after the fire was extinguished, Vucha said.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Forensic officials identified Roeder as the driver of the Volvo.

Roeder was a District 200 classroom aide at Westwood Elementary School in Woodstock.

“She was a great asset to the Westwood School community. In addition to being an employee, she was a very involved mother,” said Kevin Lyons, communications director for Woodstock Community Unit School District 200.

Roeder’s daughter was the child who was inside the vehicle when the accident occurred.

Lyons said the school is making sure the students Roeder worked with are supported after his death.

Rein said autopsies were completed Monday and Roeder died as a result of blunt force injuries in the crash.

Toxicology results are pending on all three victims.

Vucha said the driver and young passenger of the jeep were uninjured and did not require medical treatment.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office closed Davis Road between Stieg Road and Dean Street for an investigation into the crash.

The sheriff’s office said the Dodge was speeding and driving recklessly at the time of the crash.

Alcoholic beverage containers were found at the scene and it is still unknown if alcohol was also a contributing factor.

The occupants of the Volvo were wearing seat belts and the air bags were deployed, sheriff’s officials said.

The investigation remains ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
