At stop in Erie Pa, Walz courts undecided voters and Latino business owners

play

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz returned to Erie on Thursday to talk to undecided voters about the economy and, in a second stop, meet with small business owners as the presidential campaign enters its final days.

Walz held a private campaign event in Ember + Forge café before meeting a small, invitation-only audience at Vilma’s kitchena Puerto Rican restaurant at 1707 State St.

“We have the opportunity in this country to make our own decisions about the direction we’re going to take,” Walz said. “AND Vice President (Kamala) Harris’ speech the other night at the mall spoke about an economy of opportunity for all of us and his optimism about a positive tilt where everyone matters.

“And while that was the closing of a campaign, it was the first opening of his presidency, of an idea of where we’re going, of the enthusiasm surrounding it,” he continued.

Walz: Unnecessary and hurtful “trash” comment

Harris’ speech Tuesday to a crowd of about 75,000 supporters in Washington, D.C., was “in direct contract” with Former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, where Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Port Rice a “floating island of rubbish” and belittled the Puerto Rican people.

“That was not only unnecessary, but incredibly painful,” Walz said. “And, honestly, in the climate we’re in, it can be dangerous. And I think it gives us an opportunity over the next five days to energize people, to get out and vote for a better tomorrow. That new path forward , protecting access to health care, thinking about how to bring back manufacturing jobs, and talking about the things that matter to people: protecting access to health care, education, and gun violence.”

Walz said he wanted to assure people that Harris has a specific agenda for Puerto Rico and that the United States needs to make an investment in the island after Hurricane Maria in 2017.

“I say this as a teacher: we have to educate our fellow Americans about our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico, why it is important, why we are investing there and then understand how much the Puerto Rican community contributes to all of our states, here (Pennsylvania), 500,000 people “They contribute in every aspect, whether they are small business owners like we are now, education, art, science and medicine, across the board.”

‘Incredibly optimistic’ about Harris-Walz campaign

Walz thanked restaurant owners Betsy Espada and Vilma Espada-Ortiz and noted that he had just sat down with four “truly undecided voters,” who talked about the economy and prices.

“It was a great conversation and it revitalizes me every day,” he said. “You know, we have the opportunity in this country to make our own decisions about the direction we’re going to take.”

Walz said he felt “incredibly optimistic” about the campaign and that by the end of the week volunteers will have knocked on one million doors in Pennsylvania. “We have a running game that matters,” he said.

“I just think how wonderful it will be to wake up Wednesday morning to President Harris, knowing that we don’t have to have chaos. We don’t have to have division.”

Among the people Walz met was Armando Reyes42; his wife Jasso Téllez Lourdes, 41 years old; and his children, his daughter Ramona, 10, and Diego, 13.

Reyes, the grandson of a Mexican immigrant, is the owner of Lake Erie Woodworks.

“It’s mostly about immigration policy, but also about the way the candidates talk about immigrants,” Reyes said after the event. “Immigrants are the backbone of our country. Every person here in the United States is an immigrant in one way or another. And we only want to support people who understand the importance of the immigrant community, whether they arrived here yesterday or like my family has been here for over 50 years.”

It was Walz’s second visit to Erie during Harris’ truncated campaign, which began in mid-July when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

Walz visited Erie on September 5, met with campaign volunteers and took a bite to eat at Sara’s Restaurant at Presque Isle State Park and then maintaining a demonstration in front of 2,500 people in Liberty Park.

His visit comes just days after his Republican counterpart, Ohio Senator JD Vance, held a campaign rally for 650 supporters at Penn State Behrend.
