Tyler, The Creator Performed for 1,400 Fans at Surprise Show in Boston

Dedicated fans of Tyler, The Creator unexpectedly got the chance to see the rapper perform in Boston yesterday. After he published an instagram story Announcing a $5 show at Converse Lovejoy Wharf, lucky fans were able to get tickets and see the performance.

Born Tyler Okonma, the rapper performed a short set titled “30 Minutes of Chromakopia” on Thursday afternoon to celebrate his latest album, “Chromakopia,” which was released on Monday.

While Okonma previously partnered with Converse for its luxury clothing brand, Golf le Fleur, the introduction marks a new type of collaboration. The show sold out all 1,400 tickets to an enthusiastic audience, several of whom had come straight from class to attend.

Kylie Jaillet, 18, spent two hours at a Dunkin’ Donuts waiting in what seemed like an endless line in line for tickets. When the site randomly banned her, the Emmanuel College freshman decided to head to StubHub, where she and her friends, Isabella Franklin and Mary Moore, purchased their tickets for about $50 each.

“This is a great idea and a great way for artists to see fans interacting with the music,” said Franklin, who couldn’t get tickets to Tyler’s TD Garden shows in July. “I wish I could be on that show, but I’m here and it’s still going to be fun.”

The concert itself began in the same way as his last album does: with his mother’s voice. The inauguration of “St. Chroma” played loudly as the rapper took the stage and her voice shouted, “You are the light. It doesn’t depend on you, it’s on you.”

In a nod to the album art, Okonma wore a green suit, white shirt, and pink tie, accompanied by a skin-tone mask that covered the top half of his face. After the album’s opening track, “St. Chroma,” sang “Rah Tah Tah” and “Noid,” taking a break to interact with the crowd and shout out different Halloween costumes into the crowd, as well as tributes to her previous albums, including 2019’s “Igor.”

“Seriously, thank you all for coming. It was a last minute thing, but it worked,” Okonma said, then congratulated a fan dressed as the Lorax.

The rest of the setlist included “Darling, I,” “Hey Jane,” “Sticky,” and “Take Your Mask Off,” during which he followed his own lyrics and removed his mask for the rest of the performance. The energy increased for “Thought I Was Dead,” which saw the backing track fade out mid-song to allow Okonma to rap the third verse to the rapt audience, before segueing into the melancholic “Like Him.”

Amid the silence of the Charles River and the pier, the pop-up concert felt intimate despite the number of people in attendance. With a clear blue sky as a backdrop, Okonma wowed the crowd with an energetic performance and joked with audience members.

“I want to thank you all for listening to the album. “I didn’t expect it to be what it is, this (expletive) is crazy,” he said, before performing the final song of the set and album, “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” which he joked allowed him to “Leave it on one more note sad so that it feels more traumatic.

When the show ended, he took a bow and came out to the backing track and the crowd chanting one word: “Chromakopia.”
