Labor to review Waspi compensation in ‘future’, minister says

In March, the PHSO recommended compensation payments between £1,000 and £2,950 and blamed the problem on “Mismanagement” by the DWP.

A month before the general election, Ms Reeves admitted she had not allocated any money for Waspi’s compensation. Activists accused the party of “betray” the affected women.

The issue failed to feature in the budget on Wednesday, despite thousands of women protesting outside Parliament during the Chancellor’s speech.

Compensation for those affected by the Post Office and infected blood scandals, plus a loan fee scandal review were confirmed.

Another 25,000 women have died waiting for compensation since the Ombudsman’s report was published, according to the Waspi campaign.

Angela Madden, president of Waspi, welcomed the update but said questions should be asked about the time it took to resolve the issue.

He said: “The Government was right to announce compensation in the Budget for the victims of the infected blood and Post Office scandals. However, the Waspi women are also right to wonder why they are still waiting for justice after nine long years of campaigning.

“We can see that ministers are taking this report seriously and we look forward to seeing what proposals they put forward to MPs as soon as possible.”

In July, the campaign warned new parliamentarians that their The pre-election promises of support would not be forgotten..

Christine Smith, coordinator of Waspi’s Wear and Tees campaign, said 65,000 women in the north-east were affected and the current government was not acting quickly enough.

She said: “Many women had already retired to care for their elderly parents or grandchildren. It is devastating for the entire family. It also affects men, who have to work longer. When women leave, it is harder to return to the workplace.

“Up here it has been particularly devastating. Women have lost their homes, gone into debt and cannot find work. The first pension law was in 1995. If the Government had told us then, we could have planned ahead. We have never said that we do not agree with equalization.

“It makes me quite angry because (the Labor Party) already had a (compensation) plan in place from 2019. I can’t understand why this administration is dithering. The Labor Party promised the Waspi women they would see justice. Please continue with this.”
