Labor to review Waspi compensation in ‘future’, minister says

Compensation for thousands of women affected by changes to their retirement age will be reviewed in “future tax events”, a minister has said.

The women, born in the 1950s and known as Waspis, say they were not adequately warned that their state pension age would increase and They have been fighting for compensation for nine years.

Darren Jones, chief secretary to the Treasury, said the issue would be reviewed after it did not feature in the report. Rachel Reeves’ budget.

A damning Parliament and Health Services Ombudsman (PHSO) report published in March accused the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of “maladministration” and recommended compensation payments of up to £ 2,950.

In a BBC Breakfast interview, Jones said the Ombudsman’s report did not define the structure, cost or eligibility for compensation.

And he added: “That has not yet been concluded. I appreciate that it has been a couple of months since we have been in government, but the DWP has to work with stakeholders, look at the Ombudsman’s report and consider it, so we will have to return to that in future tax events. “

The Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) campaign said there were questions to answer about why those affected were still waiting for justice.

Many Waspis were forced to continue working when the state pension age was raised, first to 65 to match that of men, then to 66. They say they were not adequately warned about the changes, which affected their ability to plan their retirement and caused them financial harm.
