Nearly 30% of registered voters have returned their ballots in Oregon

As of Tuesday afternoon, nearly 30% of eligible Marion County voters had returned their ballots for the 2024 general election, a slight decrease from the 2016 general election and less than in 2020.

Marion County Clerk Bill Burgess said his office had received and scanned 65,909 ballots as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, representing 29% of the 227,004 eligible voters in Marion County.

At the same time, before the 2016 general election, 30% of eligible voters had returned their ballots, Burgess said. And in 2020, 48.7% had been returned.

Oregonians are voting for the next president of the United States. three state offices, five electoral measuresstate legislators and local races, measures and bonds.

Ballot return data from the secretary of state’s office also YoIt indicates that returns are lower than during the 2020 general election.

Burgess said he believes the COVID-19 pandemic meant more people voted in early 2020.

“Our pattern right now appears to be more like the 2016 pattern than the COVID pattern,” Burgess said.

How many ballots have been returned across Oregon?

Unofficial ballot results from the secretary of state as of Wednesday morning showed 891,444 ballots had been returned statewide.

That’s 29% of the number of registered voters in Oregon.

Oregon counties with the highest number of returned ballots

Wheeler, Wallowa, Curry, Gilliam and Grant counties led the state in percentage of returned votes with 47.1%, 44.8%, 43.5%, 40.9% and 42.4%, respectively.

Lane County reported 30.5% of ballots were returned, while Polk County reported 31.9% of ballots were returned as of Wednesday morning.

Burgess said the majority of ballots in Marion County were collected at drop-off sites.

Of 55,554 ballots his office had scanned and accepted as of Monday afternoon, 28,754 arrived through ballot boxes and 24,495 were mailed, he said. Ballots are now picked up at least daily at drop-off sites.

The remaining ballots came from other counties that sent them to Marion County, one arrived by fax and another 229 arrived by email from military or foreign voters.

When do you need to mail Oregon ballots or drop them off at the polls?

Voters can drop off their ballots in the official boxes until 8 pm on November 5.

Ballots will also be accepted at the Marion County Clerk’s Office at 555 Court St NE, Suite 2130, in Salem, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by 8 pm on Election Day and received at election offices within seven days of the election.

What to do if you are registered to vote but have not yet received a ballot

Voters who have not yet received a ballot should contact the Marion County Clerk’s Office “immediately,” Burgess said.

Replacement ballots will be mailed through Thursday and can then be picked up at the Marion County Clerk’s office.

“You can come as long as you’re here before eight o’clock on election night. We’ll take care of you,” Burgess said.
