Albion Rovers: The fan leading the Lowland League team against Hearts B

From being a mascot at Stark’s Park, playing in goal for John O’Groats in Holland to contributing to the Challenge Cup draw with David Gray, McKay has made some pretty crazy moves.

But crossing Cliftonhill countryside, a former country gem, is the wildest of all. This has consequences. For both parties involved.

Two seasons ago, Albion’s 104-year spell in the senior leagues came to an end when they were relegated following a play-off defeat to the Spartans.

Like all those who fell before them, they have struggled to adapt to life in the Lowland League, Scottish football’s fifth tier, but are led by a stalwart of the game in Sandy Clark.

However, the former Rangers, West Ham United and Heart of Midlothian striker will step aside to allow McKay to bring his experience in the Football Manager computer game to life.

“I suppose from Albion Rovers’ point of view it’s brave,” McKay said. “The fact that Sandy is willing to accept this is intriguing and has kind of interested me.”

The two have yet to exchange tactics, as part of the segment, along with BAFTA award-winning producer Duncan Cowles, a self-professed non-football fan, is being authentic and “experiencing things as they go.”

However, that could spell trouble.

Rovers have only had one game since McKay’s move was confirmed, so he has had little time to scout and study.

“They have only played one game and they won 5-0,” he said. “Unless we win 6-0, which I’m not against, it might look like we’ve gone back a little bit.

“I’ve been watching highlights and checking player profiles and stuff like that, trying to figure out who’s playing well.

“I’d like to think Sandy will give me some guidance if I inadvertently put a right back in front or a striker in the goals.

“I hope I don’t damage his reputation too much.”
