King County deputies recount daring rescue of man from burning car

Two King County Sheriff’s Office deputies are talking about their Heartbreaking experience rescuing a man from a burning car.

The incident occurred at Newcastle Golf Club Road and 136th Avenue SE, where officers and community members quickly moved to save Jacob Shook, who was trapped inside the vehicle.

Deputy Joshua Charles, who was training Deputy Cameron Gomez at the time, described the urgency of the situation.

“My heart skipped a beat when I saw the vehicle,” Charles said. “It was a scary situation. I don’t know how else to explain it. It’s not really something you can mentally prepare for; it’s just something you have to deal with and deal with and try to help this person.”

Gomez echoed the sentiment, emphasizing her focus on getting Shook to safety.

“We knew someone was trapped inside the car and that was our focus,” Gomez said.

Officers credited several community members who stopped to help, some of whom provided fire extinguishers. “The fire extinguishers were already there,” Charles said. “I guess what I heard later was someone stopping cars and asking them if they had fire extinguishers in their vehicles.”

Authorities are now emphasizing the importance of having a fire extinguisher in the car and knowing how to use it. Charles noted that the fire extinguishers made a difference and expressed relief that Shook is recovering.

“We got messages from the sister, so I’m really glad she reached out and let us know he was okay,” Gomez said. “Those five or six days, I didn’t know if he was alive.”

Jacob Shook remains at Harborview Medical Center as he continues his recovery.
