Butler County grandmother sentenced for shooting baby

HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) – The grandmother who shot her 6-month-old granddaughter last year will spend nine to 12 years behind bars.

Mia Harris pleaded guilty to felony assault charges last month and was sentenced Tuesday.

Mia Harris’ granddaughter Myra is now one and a half years old.

Myra’s mother, Destiny, took the stand and said her daughter will have special needs for the rest of her life because of this shooting.

Destiny is Harris’ daughter-in-law. She says Myra has had three surgeries and will have another in 2025.

Last December, police say Harris got into a fistfight with family members at his Liberty Township home.

He pulled out a gun and fired several shots through a bedroom door.

He then burst through the door and shot his granddaughter in the head.

In court, Harris’ defense team says it was a mental break.

“She snapped, call it a breakdown, call it a mental breakdown, she just snapped. I think in the discussions we had, I ask the court to take that into account, the mental components and the factors.”

Destiny addressed Harris directly.

“I just want you to know that you changed Myra’s life forever and that what you did to my daughter was wrong. You pulled a gun on me and I loved you. You hurt me, you hurt my whole family.”

Prosecutors say three doctors evaluated Harris and it’s true that her mental health was a concern, but prosecutors say two doctors found she did not have a serious mental health condition.

They believe it was substance abuse that led her to shoot her granddaughter that night.
