‘Vancouver Hell’ Halloween decorations draw attention

When it comes to Halloween decorations, one Vancouver resident loves to push the boundaries.

Laryssa Gervan chooses a theme each year and puts a comedic spin on the topics of the day.

In this spooky season, Gervan’s house on Victoria Drive has been transformed into the “hell of Vancouver” and the front yard is filled with local references to sigh and then laugh.

“I like choosing topics like this because it brings a little bit of levity to things that are actually really serious,” he told CTV News. “You’ll probably have a little more freedom on Halloween.”

The macabre display includes Vancouver Mayor “Ken Sin” decapitating the park board (an Eeyore plushie wearing a PB t-shirt) with a paper cutter.

It also mocks signs posted outside Lululemon founder Chip Wilson’s mansion during the provincial election campaign with a Halloween twist.

Held by a flashlight wearing a Lululemon T-shirt, the sign reads: “Trick-or-treaters seem to forget that when people ‘give’ them candy, they are participating in the evils of ‘communism.'”

There’s also a collapsed crane, a sign reading “Ghoul Chilling Park,” and a row of headstones from iconic nightclubs and music venues that have closed over the years.

“I really enjoy the reaction I get from the neighbors who come in,” Gervan said. “People have a lot of feelings and laugh about it.”
