    Montpellier fans confront players amid crisis

    With only four points from their first nine games, Montpellier HSC is at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table and, in the midst of the current crisis, which has already cost Michel Der Zakarian his job, the fans appeared at the club’s training center to make their voices heard.

    In financial difficulties, Montpellier struggled during the summer transfer window. Not being able to get rid of any players meant they couldn’t get stronger and that showed at the start of the season. They only have one victory and have already conceded 29 goals. After a 5-0 defeat against Olympique Marseille a fortnight ago, Der Zakarian lost his job.

    He has since been replaced by the return of Jean-Louis Gasset, who came out of retirement to help save the club. His mandate got off to a losing start as La Paillade lost 3-0 against Toulouse FC.

    Fans are now making their voices heard. They showed up at the training center on Wednesday to give the team a dressing down. “Do you know why we are here this morning? We are not here to start a war with you. We don’t want that. For a few years, if we wanted to start a war, we would have.” one of the Montpellier ultras began.

    He continued, “We are not here to talk about the game itself either. You have an international level manager who is here for that. Well? We have come to talk about the shirt. You wear the shirt of a club that is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Look at the training center. Who knows what it’s called? It’s called the Bernard Gasset training center, he is the coach’s father. Here it’s family, it’s the boys from La Paillade, it’s orange and blue. Our blood is orange and blue. You, right now, don’t have that blood. Well? Respect this shirt. Respect the people who work here every day. If you don’t respect that, we will fall apart.”

    The MHSC ultras asked for more effort from the current team. “You are the players, you have the power on the field. We can lose games, we don’t have a crazy team. We know, but that’s how you do it, la grenta. You sweat through your shirt.”
