Man attacked with hammer during robbery

A man was taken to hospital after being attacked with a hammer in his own home in Newry, police say.

It happened in the Violet Hill Avenue area of ​​the city at around 20:00 BST on Wednesday when a robbery was disrupted.

He said he was attacked by two men wielding a hammer, while one of the men also had a machete-style knife.

The victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and a 40-year-old man has since been arrested.

The man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

At this time he remains in police custody.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is continuing its investigations and has asked anyone with information to come forward.
