Ontario County joins nationwide Operation Green Light to honor veterans

Ontario County is participating in Operation Green Light, a national initiative that honors American veterans by lighting local landmarks green in the days leading up to Veterans Day. From Nov. 4 to Nov. 11, the Ontario County Courthouse in Canandaigua and the Geneva Complex on Seneca Street will be lit green as a tribute to the county’s 6,521 veterans.

Operation Green Light encourages residents and businesses to show their support by installing a green light bulb in a driveway or other visible area. “By turning on the green light, we let our veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported,” said Susan Smith, director of the Ontario County Veterans Services Agency. “If this simple act sparks a conversation that helps a veteran, then we have achieved our goal.”

In addition to raising awareness, the initiative highlights the challenges veterans face as they return to civilian life. Veterans interested in available services are encouraged to contact the Ontario County Veterans Services Agency at (585) 396-4185 or explore additional resources through the Department of Veterans Affairs at www.va.gov.
