Agatha always has a more shocking death (and it’s more significant than you think)

We have finally reached the end of The Way of the Witch, but in the end there was one more loss for the coven. Wednesday night’s two-episode finale of Agatha all the time was filled with revelations about the Path, the witches in it, and even what could be next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all those revelations came at a price: one more witch has met her end, and this time, it could have major implications. forward. Warning: spoilers for the end of Agatha all the time beyond this point. Keep reading only if you really want to know.

In the end, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) did not survive the adventure undertaken in the series, and the seemingly invincible and scheming witch was finally eliminated. However, it wasn’t the Path that killed Agatha nor was it a botched trial or anything like that, really. Instead, Agatha went to Death willingly and it turns out that the end of the legendary witch is just the beginning of the story. Picking up after last week’s trial in which Lilia (Patti LuPone) sacrificed herself to take down the Salem Seven.Agatha hits the road again and comes face to face with Rio (Aubrey Plaza), aka Death. It turns out that the whole time Agatha has been distracting Rio from Death’s real target: Billy (Joe Locke). It turns out that, according to Rio, Billy is an abomination who has upset the “sacred balance” taking a second life and she has to stop him from doing the same to Tommy. You see, it turns out Tommy hasn’t been reborn yet and Billy’s mission to find his brother is in trouble. Agatha ends up making a deal with Rio: since Rio can’t kill Billy because he was just reincarnated, he has to give himself over to Death willingly. Agatha says she will get him to do it, but only if Rio stops chasing her. Rio agrees.

Agatha, Billy and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) continue on the path to the final judgment, in which Jen realizes that Agatha was the witch who bound her and thus Jen is freed. But Agatha tells Billy about Tommy and the fact that he needs a body to enter, and during the final judgment, Agatha guides Billy in finding a vessel for Tommy, causing Billy to “complete” his trial and disappear. . Agatha also ends up completing her test, but ends up facing Death, who is not thrilled that Billy was not given to her. A fight ensues, Billy appears, fully in his power, and helps Agatha by giving her some of his power. Agatha then appears to turn on Billy again, revealing her deal with Rio, but when Billy mentally approaches Agatha to ask if this is how his own son died, Agatha does something unexpected: she kisses Rio and it’s literally a Kiss of Death. . Agatha dies and sacrifices herself for Billy.

But the story doesn’t end there. The final episode reveals that Billy realizes that he created The Way of the Witch, and that realization comes with a surprise visitor: Agatha, like a ghost. Agatha reveals that before Billy, the Way was actually just a myth, a lie, a scam that Agatha created centuries ago to kill witches and take their power. When Billy fully realizes that manifesting the Way means he killed Mrs. Hart, Alice, and Lilia, he becomes enraged and sets out to banish Agatha. However, he stops when Agatha’s ghost reveals why he doesn’t want to simply move on to the afterlife: he doesn’t want to face his son. It leads to a tender moment between Billy and Agatha, with Billy saying that he thinks Nicholas will forgive her, but Agatha ultimately suggests that she and Billy would make a good team, with Agatha serving as a mentor of sorts to Billy. The episode (and the series) ends with Billy sealing the road and Agatha announces “let’s go find Tommy” as the two go out into the world together.

It is certainly an important development, not only because Agatha dies, but because Agatha (as a ghost) teaming up with Billy sets in motion the possibility that Marvel, with the goal of searching for Tommy, establishes the Young Avengers or even takes over an adaptation of The Children’s Crusade. It also makes Agatha more in line with her comic book counterpart, as she is now in a position to train Billy with her magic; In the comics, Agatha trained Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the art of magic. With Agatha, to some extent, redeemed, the possibilities are endless as to where the MCU can go with the character and it will be interesting to see how it develops.
