MHS girls soccer returns to Beckley and regional volleyball matchups are being set

Oct. 30—MORGANTOWN — The 2024 fall sports season is on a fast track toward crowning this year’s state champions. Several sports will hold state finals in the next two weeks, including cross country, soccer and volleyball.

Class AAA girls soccer The Morgantown Mohigans return to the state tournament in search of their third straight Class AAA state championship after defeating Bridgeport 5-1 Tuesday night in the Region I championship game.

Junior forward Ella Miller scored a hat trick within the first ten minutes of kickoff to propel MHS to an early 3-0 lead that the Indians could not overcome.

Miller added an assist to freshman Shae Nethken, and junior Lily Gorman-Wilson added the fifth goal with a free throw in the second half.

The Mohigans will battle Region III champion George Washington in the Class AAA semifinals of the WVSSAC state girls soccer tournament next Thursday, November 7 at 5:00 pm at the Paul Cline Sports Complex in Beckley.

Class AAA Volleyball Both the Morgantown Mohigans and University Hawks made it through their sectional tournament brackets unscathed, sweeping the competition 3-0.

MHS defeated John Marshall on Tuesday night to punch its ticket to next week’s Region I co-final. The Mohigans will host Buckhannon-Upshur, who finished second in Region II.

The Hawks defeated BU on Tuesday night to capture the Region II title. They will also host a regional co-final, with a chance to secure a trip to Charleston as John Marshall visits UHS next week.

Both games will begin at 6:00 pm Wednesday from Wilson Avenue and Baker’s Ridge.
