Son kills his mother and reports a false kidnapping to 911 in San Tan Valley

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (AZ Family) — The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office says a woman was killed by her son, who then left her body in a farm field in San Tan Valley before calling police, claiming she had been kidnapped.

Pinal County Lt. Ross Teeple identified the woman as Mary Collier, 38, Wednesday morning.

Deputies say a jogger called 911 after seeing the body west of Gantzel Road and south of Skyline Drive around 9 a.m. Less than 10 minutes later, police received a call for a report of a kidnapping at a home in Vineyard Plains Unit.

Investigators later determined that a 911 call was made by her son, who said his mother had been kidnapped. However, authorities say they believe Collier and her son voluntarily left the home and walked to the farm field before he killed her.

Detectives noted there was a report of a fight the night before the murder, but there are no details on a possible motive. Authorities simply called it a case of domestic violence.

Collier had injuries consistent with being cut or stabbed, and Lt. Teeple said there was no evidence to suggest Collier was shot or that firearms were used in the crime.

Deputies said the son was found with self-inflicted wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

He will be booked into the Pinal County Jail for first degree murder once he receives treatment for his injuries.

No other information has been released. Authorities say investigators are still working to piece together what led to Collier’s death and determine a possible motive.
