Firefighters continue the fight against Rush Fire

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Fire crews are still working to contain the large grass fire that broke out in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Officials say the Rush Fire has burned more than 12,000 acres and is currently approximately 48% contained.

They say 161 people are currently assigned to the fire working with 26 engines, 2 excavators and several airplanes.

“We’re looking for hot spots on everyone and one of the best ways we’ve found to find hot spots is to take off the glove and feel and see if there are any hot embers,” said Red Team PIO John Nichols. “You’re not trying to get burned, you’re just doing it lightly when you feel any of this. Crews will be out there and doing it to make sure there’s no more heat on this edge.” .”

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge remains closed to visitors for safety reasons.
