The lawyers demanded action against the judge and also against the police officers who resorted to a case against the lawyers in the courtroom, along with compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the injured lawyers.

A day after a group of lawyers clashed with baton-wielding police and set fire to a police post inside Ghaziabad district court complex, lawyers of Ghaziabad bar association held a detailed meeting on Wednesday and decided to go on strike indefinitely demanding measures against a judge and the police officers involved.

Police said they have registered two FIRs against lawyers and others for allegedly resorting to violence in the district court complex.

According to police, violence erupted after a judge called police to remove a group of lawyers who were protesting during a bail hearing.

The police resorted to a lathi charge against the lawyers inside the district magistrate’s court and the agitated lawyers allegedly vandalized and set fire to a police post in the court complex on Tuesday.

The Ghaziabad bar association said it met its members and decided to go on an indefinite strike.

“We demand that action be taken against the judge and also against the police officers who resorted to an accusation against the lawyers in the courtroom. We also demand compensation of $2 lakh for each of the injured lawyers. About a dozen of our lawyers suffered injuries as a result of the lathi charge,” said Deepak Sharma, president of the Ghaziabad bar association.

The court is now closed for Diwali holidays until November 3.

The police after Tuesday’s incidents registered two FIRs. The first FIR was filed following a complaint lodged by judicial officials against three named lawyers and 40-50 unidentified persons.

This was filed for alleged obstruction of judicial work, damage to court property and also vandalizing and setting fire to the police post.

The second FIR was registered alleging that the lawyers resorted to pelting stones at the police force and also setting fire to objects at the police post. The FIR also claims that several policemen were injured in the clash.

“We have registered two FIRs in connection with the violence in the court complex. We are helped by CCTV footage and witness statements. The investigation is continuing,” said Rajesh Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (city).

Both FIRs were registered at Kavi Nagar police station.

The lawyers also shared a communication from the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council condemning the act of violence against lawyers and forming a five-member team of the council to investigate the role of the erring officials and decide the course of action accordingly. continue. .
