Wabash County woman ‘disappears’ from voter registration database after two decades

WABASH COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – Early voting has been underway for weeks, but for Wabash resident Mary Roy, the polls have their off-the-table feel.

She says when she went to vote, election officials couldn’t find her in the database.

“It’s very frustrating and I vote because I want my vote to count,” Mary Roy said. “It’s my right.”

In early October, he says he went to vote at the Wabash County Courthouse. That’s when he said election officials couldn’t find records on paper or in electronic databases that showed he ever voted in Wabash County.

Roy says he has lived and voted in Wabash County in every election since the early 2000s.

“I disappeared (from the database) and that worries me because a lot of other people disappeared,” Roy said. “I didn’t know and I couldn’t vote.”

21Investigates then contacted the Wabash County Clerk’s Office to get answers for Roy.

The office confirmed they could not prove Roy ever voted in Wabash County. They say they discovered she was registered to vote under her maiden name in Grant County, but it was canceled in the early 2000s, which is when they say she last voted.

Roy says this has left her with many questions and fears that her votes over the past two decades may not have counted.

“I trust the voting system,” Roy said. “I never thought there was electoral theft or fraud or anything like that. Nowadays, I might think that, but I don’t.”

After our initial call to the clerk’s office, they were able to find Roy’s record.

They said a mistake caused it to be merged with someone else, but now Roy will be able to cast his vote as planned.
