Former Seattle Mariners pitcher highlights big need for team heading into 2025

The Seattle Mariners went 85-77 in 2024 and missed the playoffs by one game for the second straight year. It was an immensely frustrating year for Seattle, which blew a 10.0-game lead in the American League West and fired manager Scott Servais as a result of a poor performance from mid-June to late August.

As the M’s look to flip the script in 2025, they have several needs. First, the team needs to acquire more offense. The main reason Seattle missed the playoffs is a lack of offensive ability to support their great pitching staff. They also have needs at first, second and third base to fill as part of that goal.

However, there is also another big need, according to former Mariners reliever Charlie Furbush. Speaking at an M roundtable about Seattle Sports 710Furbush said he wants the Mariners to acquire a tight left-handed reliever.

“I think we need someone to come in and take out that big lefty,” Furbush said. “He acts as a mini closer, so to speak, to be able to close out the big lefties, and we’re going to continue to see them. So hopefully the Mariners can get a good lefty here.”

Furbush isn’t wrong: The Mariners haven’t had a dominant lefty in years. Gabe Speier and Tayler Saucedo have had periods of effectiveness, but they are not the type of lefties Furbush is talking about.

Even previously, the team used right-hander Erik Swanson as a guy who could take out lefties thanks to his elite splitter.

Furbush spent parts of five seasons with the sailorswith a record of 12-21 and an ERA of 4.02.
