Deadline to vote by mail in Florida is Election Day, time is running out

If you received a vote by mail ballot and you haven’t mailed it in yet, you may want to drop it off or vote in person. The election is less than a week away and in Florida, your ballot should arrive before Election Day.

If something delays the mail or there are unforeseen events or weather problems, your vote may not be counted. The US Postal Service recommends that you mail your completed ballot at least a week before your state’s deadline, and in Sunshine Sate that time has already passed.

Starting Wednesday morning, almost 2.4 million voters have sent their mail-in ballots out of the 3.5 million that were requested.

What is the deadline to mail my ballot in Florida?

Vote-by-mail ballots must be completed and physically received by election officials by 7 pm on Election Day, November 5. Postmarks do not count unless you mail your ballot from outside the country.

If I haven’t mailed my ballot, can I leave it in a mailbox?

Yes. Called “secure ballot receiving stations,” drop boxes are placed at early voting sites and other authorized areas to allow voters to return their completed vote-by-mail ballots. They are open during specific hours and under camera surveillance. Check your location Supervisor of Elections Website for locations.

You can also drop off your ballot at your local Supervisor of Elections office. You can’t hand it to poll workers at the polls, but you can hand it in there and vote in person with a regular ballot.

If I haven’t mailed my ballot, can I vote at a polling place on Election Day?

Yes. As long as you haven’t sent in your mail-in ballot, you can go to an early voting location or your precinct on Election Day and vote. You must bring your ballot, marked or unmarked, to return before voting with a regular ballot.

If you do not bring it, the Supervisor of Elections office must verify that your ballot has not already been returned. If they can’t verify it, you will still be able to vote with a provisional ballot that will be counted once the status of your mail-in ballot is determined.

Do not vote in person AND mail in a ballot, as that violates Florida election law.

What happens if my ballot is damaged?

If your ballot arrives or is damaged, contact your county representative. Office of the Supervisor of Elections to get a replacement.

Can someone give me my vote-by-mail ballot?

Yes, with some restrictions.

Under Florida law, the number of sealed and signed ballots a person can possess is limited to two, in addition to his or her own, except for members of his or her immediate family. Violation of this is a serious crime.
