Yankees fan ejected for knocking ball out of Mookie Betts’ glove: ‘Let’s ‘D’ up’

Two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium during Game 4 of the World Series after one of them He tried to knock a foul ball out of Mookie Betts’ glove.

It was a strange interaction between player and fan that is rarely seen during a game, much less in a championship series. It happened in the first inning when Betts jumped to the wall in foul territory and initially caught Gleyber Torres’ fly ball.

But a fan, identified by ESPN as Austin Capobiancor, he inexplicably grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Capobianco’s friend John Peter then grabbed Betts’ ungloved hand.

Betts reacted with disgust, but it quickly turned to joy when Torres was ruled out for fan interference.

“He won’t be watching the game much longer,” Fox analyst John Smoltz said on the broadcast. He was right.

Fans were later escorted from their front row seats by security to applause and cheers from the Yankee faithful, who also booed security.

And apparently the subscriber duo has long discussed the scenario.

“We always joke about the ball in our area,” Capobianco told ESPN. “We are not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’ll go up to the ‘D’. “Someone defends, someone hits the ball. We talk about it. “We are willing to do this.”

The Dodgers led the game 2-0 at the time of the game, but New York won 11-4 and forced a Game 5.

“I know when I’m wrong and as soon as I did it, I was like, ‘Guys, I’m out of here,'” Capobianco told ESPN. “I patrol that wall and they know it.”

This was the second time Torres had an at-bat affected by fan interference in this World Series after it happened in the ninth inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. In that instance he was awarded a double.

The good news for Capobianco and Peter? They apparently will be allowed to return to Yankee Stadium for Game 5 on Wednesday, they told ESPN.
