Supreme Court allows Virginia to remove noncitizens from voter rolls

The Supreme Court allowed on Wednesday Virginia to carry out a purge of approximately 1,600 people from their voter lists before the November 5 election as part of a program to prevent ineligible noncitizens vote.

Virginia had asked the justices to intervene after a federal district court judge determined that the state’s mass expungement of voter registrations violated a 90-day “quiet period” established by federal law. The high court granted the state’s request Wednesday without providing any explanation for the disagreements of the three Democratic-appointed judges.
