Man shot inside Bridgeport University dining hall

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WFSB) – One person was shot inside the University of Bridgeport dining hall on Tuesday.

Police responded to the university around 6:45 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired.

Officers found a man who had been shot and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said the victim is cooperating with detectives to locate the suspect, who remains at large.

None of those involved were college students; Officials stressed that this was an isolated incident.

Since the University of Bridgeport is an open campus, anyone in the area can access campus facilities, which is why these two men were inside the dining hall.

The university remained closed early Wednesday and the public was advised to avoid the area if possible.

Bridgeport resident Bertha Valladares said she had never seen anything like this: “I’m very surprised because this street and this area are very safe… but this is our reality. It’s sad, but it’s true.”

City Council President Aidee Nieves stated, “On behalf of the city, I would like to thank the Bridgeport Police Department and the Bridgeport Emergency Operations Center for their quick response and protection of the university campus, along with the students. . The safety of college students, faculty, and nearby residents is paramount to all of us within the city. “We want to reassure families that their children are safe and this was an isolated incident.”

Police said no further updates were currently available.
