Guildford: Active travel plan scrapped for safety reasons

It was supported by Guildford MP Zoe Franklin and several ward councillors, including George Potter, who argued that the project, whilst not perfect, was a considerable improvement on the current design. according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service., external

Politicians said currently unsafe roads and footpaths discourage people from walking and cycling, causing increased congestion along the main route in and out of Guildford town centre.

Others disagreed, saying the plan would have put pedestrians and cyclists in direct conflict with each other, prevented vulnerable people from using public transport and, in its narrowest section, created pinch points.

In the end, the objectors won and Surrey County Council leader Tim Oliver said the matter, which had been two years in the making, had now been put to rest.
