What voters should know before going to the polls

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The last day for early voting is October 31 and as more people head to the polls, election commission leaders explained what voters need to know to avoid running into problems while voting.

Administrators said the first step in casting a vote at a polling place is to check and make sure people have everything they need to be eligible to vote.

Davidson County Elections Administrator Jeff Roberts said the checklist should start with identification.

“You just need to bring a photo ID issued by the state of Tennessee or the federal government,” Roberts said.

Roberts said polling places will even accept an expired driver’s license if the person is voting for the first time. Polling locations will also accept U.S. passports, military photo IDs, Tennessee Department of Safety photo IDs, or gun permits that have a photo.

According to Roberts, election administrators ensure that the voting process runs smoothly.

“No one has been turned away, even if you have to vote a provisional ballot, go out, vote and then we will determine if you are eligible for your vote to count.

On November 5, election leaders face a common problem. According to election administrators, voters visit random polling locations and hope to collect their votes.

However, according to the Davidson County Election Commission, people must go to the designated polling place to properly cast their vote.

People can find their designated polling place by searching “find my polling place.” People in Davidson County can find their polling place at nashville.gov. There, they will type in their address and a designated voting location will appear.

Roberts said that as early voting continues, people should be prepared for some times and places to be busier than others.

“Keep in mind we have some very busy locations,” Roberts said.

Some popular places include the Green Hills Library and the Hermitage Library, Roberts said.
