Westchester County Crime: Suspect Charged After 1 Dead, 2 Injured at Somers Apartment Building

SOMERS, Westchester County (WABC) — The suspect accused of a deadly shooting at a Westchester apartment complex was arrested and charged with murder after a manhunt forced the closure of schools and a shelter in place.

Fernando Jimenez, 40, is accused of shooting his girlfriend and her two children in an apartment behind Crossroads Plaza on Route 6 in Somers around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Fernando Jimenez, 40, is accused of shooting his girlfriend and her two children in an apartment behind Crossroads Plaza on Route 6 in Somers.

The victims were found inside the residence. Sources told Eyewitness News that the two minors were boys, one in 10th grade and the other in eighth grade.

Two of the victims were rushed to Westchester Medical Center and a third to New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital.

The 10th grade student was pronounced dead at the hospital and the eighth grade student is in critical condition. The mother is said to be stable.

Jiménez was arrested shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday. He is not the children’s father.

He was arraigned Tuesday night and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

New York State Police had issued shelter-in-place orders for Westchester County residents and closed schools in the Putnam Valley district for the day amid the search for the gunman.

The Somers Central School District said in a message on its website that it canceled all after-school activities Tuesday “in light of the tragic incident that has impacted our community. While our schools are safe, given the severity of the situation and “Out of respect for the family, we have chosen to cancel all extracurricular activities.”

The motive for the shooting also remains in question as New York State Police lead the investigation.
