Democrats Release Attack Ad Against Republican Incumbent Who Voted to Impeach Donald Trump Following Jan. 6 Attack

Democrats launched a new ad targeting Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) for supporting efforts to remove former President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, as part of an election tactic to discourage Republican voters from backing their party’s candidate as Election Day approaches.

The 30-second TV ad. of the Voter Protection Project, a group that supports Democratic candidates, warns Republican voters in California’s 22nd District that Valadao, a five-term incumbent, “turned his back on President Trump and the entire MAGA movement.”

The ad, which ran last week, continues with a clip of the California Republican saying, “We don’t need President Trump.”

It concludes with a sinister voiceover that asks: “With a record like that, who needs David Valadao?”

Valadao’s announcement is part of a now-standard tactic used by Democrats to discourage far-right voters from supporting Republican candidates in crucial races that could affect the House and Senate.

Valadoa currently faces a tough re-election battle in his blue-leaning district against two-time challenger Rudy Salas, a Democrat, who is making his second attempt to flip the seat.

Valadao is one of two House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump to remain in office, along with Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.).

Less than two weeks after the riots of January 6, 2023, Valadao said he voted in favor of impeachment because Trump “was, without a doubt, a driving force in the catastrophic events that took place on January 6.”

“(Trump’s) inciting rhetoric was un-American, hateful and absolutely an impeachable offense,” Valadao said on Twitter on January 13, 2021.
