Highway 39 streetlights still in the planning phase

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTO) – Today’s city council meeting continued the debate over Highway 39 streetlights.

The lights are planned to be installed along a 1-mile stretch between the Coca Cola plant and 33rd Street.

MDOT removed these lights about a year ago to make room for new cross lanes and highway widening.

David Hodge with Meridian Public Works said they have been considering their options and are still planning the next and best move for Highway 39.

“The lighting will now have to be on each shoulder, so there will be a light on each side of the street. That’s double the number of poles that would be needed to light this backup between Dale Drive and 33rd Street. We are going to continue putting together a package. We’ll put it out to tender just to see how much it will cost to make that project a reality. It is currently a trend for cities to own their own lights instead of renting them from the electric company. I think buying and holding on our own will be a better alternative as far as cost-benefit analysis goes. We’ll find out once we put together a package, put it out to bid and see what the numbers are,” Hodge said.

So far no proposal has been presented to the city council.
