Two arrested for burglarizing homes affected by Hurricane Helene in Caldwell and Burke counties

Through a joint investigation between the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, two people were arrested for at least four cases of burglary and larceny that occurred in Caldwell and Burke counties between on Oct. 1 and Oct. 22, according to a news release. release from the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.

The incidents occurred at residential homes in both counties after the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, according to the news release. Investigators said the suspects targeted residences that were empty due to power outages. During the joint investigation, law enforcement recovered a total of 80 items of stolen property that were taken from the raid sites, according to the news release.

Some of the items recovered included two all-terrain vehicles, a Honda four-wheel vehicle, numerous firearms and many other household items. The total value of items recovered during this investigation by both the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office is estimated at $50,000, according to the news release.

Calvin Wayne Bowen, 45, was arrested on October 17 and is charged by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office with:

* Two counts of burglary, two counts of larceny after burglary, two counts of larceny of a firearm and two counts of felony possession of stolen property.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office charges Bowen with:

* Breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Derrick Baylee Robinson, 25, was arrested on October 22 and is charged by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office with:

* Two counts of burglary, two counts of larceny after burglary, two counts of larceny of a firearm and two counts of possession of stolen property.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office charges Robinson with:

* Breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Both Bowen and Robinson are being held at the Caldwell County Detention Center under secure Caldwell and Burke County bonds.

Investigators are still seeking help to recover additional items that have been stolen in these cases.
