Movember celebrates 18 years supporting men’s health

Starting November 1, the men’s charity motion encourages everyone to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

“More than 1.4 million men worldwide are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and, sadly, that burden is expected to increase to 2.3 million men by 2040,” Movember officials said in a statement. of press.

“In Canada, 39 men died due to testicular cancer in 2022; that’s more than three men every month.”

Focusing on improving men’s health, Movember began its campaign in 2007, inspiring other initiatives including the oil rig challenge.

Oil Rig Rumble Challenge

For the third year, members of Alberta’s oil and gas industry will participate in the oil rig noise challenge in November.

“It’s not just about growing mustaches or raising money for Movember; it’s about starting important conversations about men’s health that will help them live healthier, longer, happier lives,” officials said.

The main goal of the 30-day campaign is to make it commonplace for men to talk about their physical and mental health, even at work.

“We are promoting Movember to reinforce awareness of the importance of mental well-being among our employees and the support we have for them,” said Secure Energy Vice President Greg Filipchuk.

“We need to focus and ensure that men and women take care of themselves.”

Movember data shows that suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian men aged 15-44.

“Globally, we lose a man to suicide every minute of every day, and more than two in three suicide deaths are men.”

This year, the charity hopes to surpass the $1.06 million it raised in 2023.
