‘Embarrassed’: Nagorik Committee says court order seeking ban against 11 parties a ‘misunderstanding’

There was a “misunderstanding” regarding petitions seeking a court order to ban 11 parties, including the Awami League and the Bangladesh Communist Party, and cancel the last three elections, Nasiruddin Patwari, convenor of the Jatiya Committee, said today (October 29). Nagorik.

During the committee’s meeting with the Students’ Anti-Discrimination Movement and the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in Dhaka, Patwari said the entire matter has “embarrassed” them and another court order will be filed once the matter is resolved.

Meanwhile, the CPB said the court order was a blow to the leftist movement.

The party’s general secretary, Ruhin Hossain Prince, said: “I don’t think this is the end of these incidents. This was a blow to the left movement. I would like to warn those who want to abolish fascism and do ethical politics to refrain from such acts.”


Masud Rana, coordinator of the Left Democratic Alliance, said: “For many years we (Basad, CPB and the alliance) have been fighting against fascism. We consider that this order is part of a deep conspiracy and will make the mass uprising be controversial.”

That same day, Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah and Hasibul Islam, coordinators of the Student Movement Against Discrimination, decided not to continue with the lawsuit seeking court directives to prevent 11 parties from carrying out political activities.

At the same time, it was announced that they will not proceed with another appeal that questions the legitimacy of the last three parliamentary elections (10, 11 and 12).

The court petition, filed yesterday (October 28), is called Awami League (AL), Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party (Manju), Ganatantri Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Tarikat Federation of Bangladesh, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist-Leninist) (Barua) and Bangladesh Socialist Party.
