Florida man facing divorce shoots woman and her family

A DeLand man going through a divorce shot and wounded his soon-to-be ex-wife and her siblings during an argument Sunday night, police said.

Bertram Martin, 30, who turned himself in after the shooting, was booked without bond Monday in the Volusia County Jail on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Sunday in the 1000 block of Springdale Court in the Spring Hill community, police said.

The estranged wife, her sister and brother tried to leave the Springdale Court home after the argument broke out, but Martin followed them and shot them as they fled, DeLand city spokesman Chris Graham said.

More charges may be filed against Martin since the shooting is still under investigation, Graham said.

The officers who responded to the scene found the woman and her brothers with gunshot wounds. All victims were taken to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford.

The woman’s brother was reported to be in critical condition, Graham said.

The condition of the other two victims was not immediately known Monday.

An initial investigation indicated the shooting stemmed from a family dispute between Martin and his ex-wife, who is going through a divorce, Graham said.

Court records show that in 2018 Martin was arrested for pointing a gun at his sister during an argument over financial matters. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improper display of a firearm/dangerous weapon.

According to court records, prosecutors did not charge Bertram in that case.
