Pido Jarencio causes a stir again after a scathing message to his critics

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas coach I ask Jarencio caused quite a stir when he delivered a direct message to his critics following Sunday’s 79-70 victory over Far Eastern University.

“Ang Dami Kong puncher. “I love you all, mamatay na kayong lahat,” he said jokingly, though with a hint of reality as he couldn’t hide his exasperation at the team’s critics.

Indeed, it has been a difficult stretch for the Growling Tigers.

Looking to make a splash in this UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament, UST found itself in a slump with a three-game losing streak, falling to top teams University of the Philippines and La Salle before a painful defeat at home against Ateneo to start the second. round.

Of course, when things don’t go as planned, criticism will always be instantaneous. And Jarencio, always the father figure, knew he would always be this team’s first line of defense.

Ako ang sasalo ng lahat,” he said.

It doesn’t mean that those words don’t reach him, and after this victory to move to a 5-6 card, emotions took over the mentor.

And he responded with the only thing he knows how to do: defend himself, even if his words get him into trouble again.

Jarencio’s frustration is understandable. After all, it’s been an uphill climb to get UST respectable again after years of stagnation.

After the pandemic, things have not been easy in Spain, changing from coach to coach with little success.

Over the past three seasons, the Growling Tigers have only managed to win seven games total, including a one-win campaign with Bal David in UAAP Season 85.

Even in Jarencio’s return last year, nothing came easy as UST only managed a 3-11 win-loss record, leading to a massive overhaul of the team for this current run.

For the fierce strategist, his words are only meant to protect those who matter: the entire team and those who believe through thick and thin.
