Who is running for Vanderburgh County Coroner?

EVANSVILLE — Vanderburgh County voters have more than just county council and commission seats on the ballot this year.

Down-ballot races for positions like Vanderburgh County Coroner are also up for grabs and contested.

The position is currently held by Steve Lockyear, who will not seek re-election.

Voters will choose between Republican Bryan Underwood and Democrat Keith Mosby on November 5. If a candidate does not provide answers, they did not respond.

Here’s a Q&A that covers some of the big topics from the coroner’s office.

Briefly describe what relevant work experience you offer as a candidate for Vanderburgh County Coroner.

Bryan Underwood: As a violent crimes detective, I am called to all death investigations, unless it involves a person in hospice care. My job is to determine if the death is due to natural causes or if there are signs of foul play. In most cases, I have already determined the cause of death before the coroner is called. And being involved in over 160 deaths, I am qualified to make that decision.

If the public asked you, how would you describe the duties of the Vanderburgh County Coroner?

Bryan Underwood: The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s primary job is to verify the cause of death and positively identify the deceased. Additionally, the coroner is sometimes responsible for signing the certificate or locating the deceased’s doctor and having him or her sign the death certificate.

If elected, are there any changes you would like to implement in the coroner’s office?

Bryan Underwood: There are three things I would like to implement, the first I would like to add is grief counseling for both the victim’s family and my deputy coroners. The second thing I would like to add is to obtain special funds to help offset funeral costs for those who have lost a family member and do not have the funds for a proper burial. And the third thing I would like to do is partner with EVSC to reach middle and high school students to reinforce the danger of drugs and the harsh reality of how drugs can affect not only their lives, but the lives of others. . family members.

If elected, will you feel comfortable creating and presenting a budget to the county?

Bryan Underwood: I would definitely feel comfortable creating a budget; As with any new job, there will be a learning curve and I am excited to take on the challenge.

Do you think the coroner plays a role in combating issues like opioid-related deaths? If so, how do you see that role?

Bryan Underwood: Data from coroners across the country has been instrumental in informing the public and experts about the opioid crisis. Coroners serve as expert witnesses in lawsuits and criminal cases involving opioid abuse. As a coroner, I would continue to provide data, statistics, and other information on opioid-related deaths in our community, and work with local law enforcement agencies to provide education and disseminate information about the dangers of opioid use.
